Environmental impact: materials, recyclability, and longevity

This is a question we hear often, and it deserves a straightforward answer rather than a broad claim.

We'll describe what we can say with confidence. We won't dress it up beyond what we can actually demonstrate.

Materials and recyclability

Steel cans — galvanised and HDG — are made from steel with a zinc coating. At the end of their working life, the steel and zinc can be recycled through standard metal recycling channels.

Brass and copper cans — both made from solid material — can similarly be recycled at end of life through metal recycling.

Plastic cans can be recycled at end of life through plastic recycling channels, subject to local collection and sorting facilities.

Packaging — Haws packaging is made from recycled cardboard and is fully recyclable.

Service life and repairability

A watering can that lasts a long time replaces fewer cans over the years. That's a practical consideration worth stating plainly.

Metal Haws cans are built to a gauge and construction standard designed for sustained regular use. With normal care — emptying and storing away from frost, rinsing after use with liquid feeds — they can remain in working order for many years. Guarantees range from three years on plastic cans to a lifetime guarantee on some HDG products.

Roses and downspouts are available as replacement parts, which means that if an attachment is lost, worn, or blocked, it can be replaced without replacing the can.

What we won't claim

We don't describe Haws products as "sustainable" or "environmentally friendly" as standalone descriptors.

Those terms cover a wide range of claims — manufacturing processes, supply chains, carbon footprints, end-of-use outcomes — and we don't have validated data across all of them to stand behind a broad label. What we have described above is what we can confirm: recyclable materials at end of life, recycled and recyclable packaging, and products built to last with replacement parts available.
