Ordering replacement roses and downspouts: a ferrule-matching guide

Matching the ferrule

Every Haws watering can has a ferrule—the metal or plastic ring on the spout where the rose attaches. The ferrule type determines which roses and downspouts will fit.

The main ferrule types are:

No.1 Brass – small ferrule, found on the Rowley Ripple range

No.3 Brass – standard ferrule, found on most larger cans with brass ferrules

No.3 Plastic – standard ferrule, found on plastic cans

No.4 Brass – large brass ferrule, found on the Bearwood Brook and Hockley Heritage

No ferrule – the Fazeley Flow has no ferrule and cannot accept any rose

Before ordering, identify which ferrule your can has. You can find this in the product documentation or tell us the name and capacity of your can and we can advise you.

What roses are available for each ferrule

For No.3 Brass ferrule cans

You can choose from all-brass oval or round roses in four spray patterns each:

        Extra Fine Spray

        Fine Spray

        Fine Spray High Flow

        Coarse Spray

Choose between oval and round based on your preference. The spray pattern determines how the water is distributed—Extra Fine Spray is gentler and finer, Coarse Spray delivers more flow.

For No.3 Plastic ferrule cans

You can choose from brass-faced plastic oval or round roses in four spray patterns each:

        Extra Fine Spray

        Fine Spray

        Fine Spray High Flow

        Coarse Spray

These work identically to the brass roses but are designed for plastic ferrules.

For No.4 Brass ferrule cans

The General Purpose Rose in all-brass construction is the compatible choice. This is a coarse spray rose designed for the larger No.4 Brass ferrule.

For No.1 Brass ferrule cans

The Baby Oval Rose is the only compatible rose for the No.1 Brass ferrule. It is available in Extra Fine Spray and Fine Spray patterns.

For Fazeley Flow cans

The Fazeley Flow has no ferrule and cannot accept any rose attachment. If you need a spray, you'll need a different watering can.

Rose sets

If you want multiple spray patterns available, we sell Rose Sets containing several roses together. These work with the appropriate ferrule types and are a convenient way to have options for different tasks.

Replacement downspouts

Plastic Downspout – Compatible with No.3 Brass or No.3 Plastic ferrule cans.

Brass Downspout – Compatible with No.3 Brass ferrule cans only.

How many roses come with your can when you order

When you order a watering can with a rose, the can comes with one rose. The specific rose is listed on the product page and matches the ferrule type of the can.

If you want additional roses or different spray patterns, order them separately. The rose sets described above are ideal for this.

Replacing a rose that's attached with an old ferrule

If you're replacing a rose that's been on your can for a long time, you may find it difficult to remove. This can happen if corrosion has formed at the brass interface, bonding the old ferrule to the spout.

Do not force it. Forcing can damage the spout ferrule and make it impossible to seal a new rose properly.

Instead:

1.     Try gently wiggling and twisting the rose back and forth to see if it loosens

2.     If still stuck, leave it for a few days and try again

3.     If it remains stuck, contact us for advice before attempting further removal

Once the old rose is removed, clean the spout ferrule with a damp cloth before fitting the new one.

Checking compatibility before you order

Always confirm:

4.     Your ferrule type – Look at your can or tell us the product name

5.     The rose ferrule code – Check the product page for the ferrule type of the rose you're considering

6.     They match – The rose must be designed for your can's ferrule type

If you're unsure, we're happy to help. Tell us your can model and we'll recommend the compatible roses.
