Rose compatibility: which roses fit which cans

The ferrule system: how roses connect

Every Haws watering can that accepts a rose has a ferrule at the end of the spout. The ferrule is a tapered fitting that holds the rose in place. Rose compatibility is entirely determined by ferrule type. Only roses designed for your specific ferrule type will fit.

Haws uses three main ferrule types in the current range:

No.1 Brass ferrule. A small brass ferrule fitted to smaller indoor cans. It uses all-brass roses.

No.3 Brass ferrule. A standard brass ferrule fitted to larger outdoor cans. It uses all-brass roses.

No.3 Plastic ferrule. A plastic ferrule fitted to some outdoor cans. It uses brass-faced plastic roses (roses with a brass spray face and plastic body).

No.4 Brass ferrule. A larger brass ferrule fitted to specific compact outdoor cans. It uses the General Purpose Rose only (an all-brass rose with a different specification).

No ferrule. Some cans, like the Fazeley Flow, have no ferrule. These cans cannot accept a rose or downspout of any kind.

Which ferrule do I have

Look at the end of your can's spout. You'll see a tapered cone-shaped fitting.

If it's brass-coloured and relatively small, it's a No.1 Brass ferrule (indoor cans only).

        If it's brass-coloured and standard-sized, it's a No.3 Brass ferrule.

        If it's plastic-coloured (usually greenish) and standard-sized, it's a No.3 Plastic ferrule.

        If it's brass-coloured and noticeably larger than a No.3, it's a No.4 Brass ferrule.

If there's no visible fitting at all, there's no ferrule.

Check your product documentation if you're unsure.

Important compatibility warnings

Never fit an all-brass rose to a plastic ferrule. The weight and fit pressure of an all-brass rose will damage a plastic ferrule. The plastic ferrule is not designed to support the mechanical load. If you accidentally fit an all-brass rose to a plastic ferrule, remove it immediately and inspect the ferrule for damage.

Brass-faced plastic roses are designed for plastic ferrules only. These roses can be used with No.3 Plastic ferrules without risk. However, the Plastic Downspout is compatible with both No.3 Brass and No.3 Plastic ferrules.

Ordering a new rose

When you order a rose as a replacement or to try a different spray weight or face shape, confirm three things:

1.     Your ferrule type. Match all-brass roses to brass ferrules, brass-faced plastic roses to plastic ferrules.

2.     Your ferrule size. A No.3 rose won't fit a No.1 or No.4 ferrule.

3.     Your spray weight and face shape preference. Decide whether you want the spray gentler or heavier, and whether you want focused or broad coverage.

If you're ordering a rose to come with a new can, check the can's documentation to see which rose is supplied as standard. You can order the can with that rose or select a different compatible rose.

Can you change the rose on a screw-fit ferrule

Some older Haws cans use a screw-fit ferrule (also called a No.3 Screw ferrule). These ferrules work differently from the taper fit system. If your can has a screw-fit ferrule, you can change the rose, but you'll need a compatible screw-fit rose. Ask Haws for guidance if you're unsure whether your can uses a screw-fit system.
