The Haws seal of approval
A clear visual marker shows the true quality of a Haws can
Haws watering cans are easily identified today thanks to the gleaming brass medallion which proudly adorns each new can. Some call it a ‘seal’, but we affectionately call it the medallion.
As well as displaying the company name, 1886 as the year of establishment, and the fact each watering can is crafted in England, the current medallion also displays a pair of leafy hawthorn sprigs, each bearing little fruit (also known as haws).
The use of hawthorn as a logo has been a feature of Haws watering cans since the early days and has appeared in various guises – usually as a medallion or label on the can’s shoulder, but also embossed with the company name into the metalwork or plastic. Earlier versions of the logo may have larger sprigs of hawthorn and do without a date of establishment.

Some medallions mention a patent or registered trademark and give a more precise location of manufacture, such as ‘Clapton, London’ or ‘Clapton Works, Bishops Stortford’. Those produced by TALA from 1953–1976 (after the company was sold to a third party) may include ‘Stourbridge, England’ around the rim, and from 1976–1982 ‘Haws Elliott Limited, Walsall’. The Haws name was once also stamped on every rose.
In the early years of manufacture, at the end of the 1880s into the early 1990s, rival watering can makers widely copied – or at least were strongly influenced by – the Haws design, such was its great success. Haws customers were warned only genuine Haws cans were able to use the phrase ‘registered trade mark’, so the medallion was in effect an identifier that proved it was a true, quality Haws can and not simply ‘Haws pattern’ – a slogan then used by competitors making cheaper if similar-looking cans.
The brass medallions were originally applied by hand and lovingly polished before packing and dispatch.
Occasionally, after years of use and wear, the brass medallion can become lose and may then be lost. We offer replacement brass medallions for our current range of cans which are easily re-applied, restoring the original look of your watering can.
