Friends of Haws: Copper and Green – A Natural Solution to Slug Troubles
At Haws, we’ve always celebrated thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and products that support a more sustainable way to garden. From time to time, we like to introduce you to fellow makers, content creators, and brands we admire - people who share our values and inspire us. We’re calling this series Friends of Haws.
This month, we’d love you to meet Paul from Copper and Green.
Meeting Paul at the Garden Press Event
Earlier this year, we attended the Garden Press Event, a brilliant show for garden designers, retailers, and makers. Among the sea of stalls and displays, Paul’s stand stood out. His beautifully made copper planters drew us in - and so did the story behind them.
We got chatting, and the conversation quickly turned to slugs (as it often does when you're surrounded by passionate gardeners). Paul explained how copper naturally deters slugs and snails - when they touch it, they experience a mild reaction between their slime and the metal, which gives them a tiny electric shock. It doesn’t harm them, but it definitely encourages them to find their salad fix elsewhere.
Paul then showed us his clever invention: pure copper pot rings that clip securely around plant pots to form an attractive, long-lasting barrier. No chemicals. No mess. Just a simple, beautifully hand-crafted solution.
Why Copper?
Copper is a brilliant natural deterrent for slugs and snails. It’s completely safe for pets, children, and pollinators - and there’s no need to reapply or replace anything once it’s in place.
Unlike copper tape, which can peel away or lose effectiveness outdoors, these solid copper rings are made to last. They fasten securely to the rim of your pots, forming a continuous barrier slugs won’t cross. And because they’re made from 100% copper, they’ll age beautifully over time.
The Perfect Solution for Potted Plants
These rings are ideal for protecting container-grown plants - especially vulnerable ones like hostas, salad leaves, or tender young seedlings. They’re easy to use and, quite honestly, they look lovely too. A simple belt-style clasp fastens them neatly in place.

Available in Four Sizes:
- Small: Fits rim diameters 18-30cm
- Medium: Fits 25-45cm
- Large: Fits 35–60cm
- Extra Large (XXL): Fits 45-75cm
Tip: Choose the smallest size that will fit snugly over your pot's rim. For example, if your pot is 40cm wide, go for the medium.
