What To Water: April

As April unfolds, the increasing daylight and warmer temperatures signal a period of vigorous growth for both your indoor and outdoor plants. Proper watering during this time is crucial to support this development and ensure healthy, vibrant greenery for the rest of the year. Here's a guide to help you navigate the watering needs of your plants this month.

Indoor Plants

With the arrival of spring, indoor plants often exhibit lots of new growth, indicating a need for more frequent watering. However, it's essential to tailor your watering routine to the specific needs of each plant species:

  • Moisture-Loving Plants: Species such as ferns, peace lilies and nerve plants benefit from consistent moisture. Water these plants approximately once per week, ensuring the soil remains damp but not waterlogged.

  • Low-Maintenance Plants: Snake plants, ZZ plants and succulents require less frequent watering, typically around once every two weeks. These plants are adapted to store water and prefer their soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Humidity Considerations: Tropical plants, such as bromeliads and orchids, thrive in higher humidity. Regular misting of their leaves or placing a tray of water nearby can help maintain the necessary moisture levels in the air.

Always check the top inch of the soil before watering; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure pots have a proper drainage layer or drainage holes to prevent water accumulation in the base of the pot.

Outdoor Plants

As we all know, April's weather can be unpredictable, with varying rainfall and temperature fluctuations. Monitoring soil moisture and adjusting your watering practices in the garden is vital.

  • Newly Planted Perennials and Shrubs: Plants such as delphiniums, dianthus, and hydrangeas, which are often planted in April, require regular watering to establish their root systems. Water these plants thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during their initial growth phase.

  • Established Border Plants: Most mature perennials and shrubs are more resilient and may not need frequent watering in April, especially if spring rainfall is adequate. However, during dry spells, provide a deep watering once a week to support their health and new growth.

  • Containers: Newly planted or established containers, pots and window boxes require more watering than beds and borders as the soil is much more exposed to drying winds and warm sunshine, so ensure that you're keeping them well watered even if it does rain!

  • New Annuals: Freshly planted annuals and bedding plants need regular watering to make sure that they establish strong, deep and healthy root systems that will ensure their durability during the hotter summer months.  Be sure to water these multiple times in a week if needed.

  • Lawns: To maintain a lush green lawn, water deeply but less frequently, aiming for about one inch of water per week. Early morning watering is ideal to reduce evaporation and allow grass blades to dry before evening, minimizing disease risk.

General Watering Tips

  • Time of Day: Watering in the early morning is best, as this allows your plants to absorb enough moisture before the heat of the day increases evaporation rates.  Never water during the midday sun as it’s much less productive and water droplets can also scorch plant leaves.

  • Soil Preparation: Incorporating organic matter, such as well rotted compost, into your soil can improve its water retention capabilities, reducing the need for frequent watering.

  • Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch around plants helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

By understanding and responding to the specific watering needs of your indoor and outdoor plants this April, you can foster a thriving garden that will flourish in the coming months and ensure that you have a summer filled with fantastic blooms and foliage!
